Statement

Date: Aug. 11, 2011
Location: Miami, FL
Issues: Foreign Affairs

U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, met earlier today with John Caulfield, who will assume the post of chief of mission of the U.S. Interests Section (USINT) in Havana in September. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"I was pleased to meet this afternoon with John Caulfield, who will soon step into the important post of chief of mission of the U.S. Interests Section in Havana.

"The promotion of human rights and democracy in Cuba must be a central purpose of the U.S. mission in Havana. It is important that USINT actively engage the Cuban people, including civil society and dissident groups, in order to help foster democratic principles on the island, including freedom of expression, press, and assembly.

"I look forward to working closely with Mr. Caulfield in his new position and hope that he will focus on advancing U.S. interests by helping the Cuban people bring about a transition to multiparty representative democracy."
