Statement on the Amended Budget Control Act

Congressman Francisco "Quico" Canseco (TX-23) released the following statement regarding tonight's vote in the House of Representatives on the Budget Control Act:

"Tonight, after a great deal of reading, reflection, and discussion on what is included in this final bill, I cast a vote in favor of the Budget Control Act. Let me be clear, this bill is not the bill my colleagues and I would have drafted if we were in control of the government. I would have preferred that we cut more spending instead of raising the amount of debt our nation can borrow. Yet, this bill cuts spending and gives the states the chance to consider the Balanced Budget Amendment. Ultimately, this bill represents another small step in the path of putting our nation on a sustainable fiscal path.

"The President, who had until very recently shown no intention of abandoning his out-of-control spending agenda, came to the table having given up the idea of kicking the can down the road and raising taxes on hard working families and businesses.

"Passage of the Budget Control Act shows that Washington's spending culture is beginning to change. The conversation has shifted from an agenda of ever growing government and increased taxes. Today, we are talking about cutting spending. The American people have demanded that we take a hard look at how we are spending their hard earned tax dollars. They sent me to Washington to cut spending and get America's fiscal house in order.

"This decision was not easy, but in the days ahead the House will continue to look at ways to cut more spending. This debt is like a cancer, continuing to spend in this manner is simply not an option if we are to leave our children and grandchildren a brighter future than we were given."
