Statement on July Jobs Report

U.S. Congressman Mick Mulvaney (SC-05) today released the following reaction to the latest unemployment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

"Any increase in employment is welcome news these days. But there is still little evidence that things are going to get dramatically better any time soon. Unfortunately, Washington big-spenders continue to see this issue as a political opportunity, not a problem that desperately needs a solution.

"Just yesterday, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wrote an op-ed entitled "Unlike GOP, Democrats will focus on jobs.' This was an interesting effort to distract folks from her actual record on job creation (trillions of dollars in new debt, with millions of jobs lost) but I'm guessing that most aren't buying it.

"Nor do folks need to be reminded that, in spite of a trillion-dollar "stimulus' spending spree, our unemployment rate remains at historic highs. They are living it.

"The simple truth is that when the government spends less, businesses spend more. And when businesses can spend more, people go back to work. Reducing the size and spending of the federal government worked in the 1990's when we had a divided government, and, as soon as Washington decides to learn from the past, it will work again."
