Hinchey: Shale Gas "Enron" Economics Must Be Questioned, SEC Should Investigate

Statement

Date: June 26, 2011
Location: Kingston, NY

Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today released the following statement in reaction to new information revealed in today's New York Times regarding the questionable economics of shale gas drilling.

"Today's revelations should raise more serious questions about the economics behind the shale gas rush. We already knew shale gas drillers were misleading the public about hydrofrackingfracking's environmental risks. Now we are learning that these companies may be cooking the books and using Enron-like tactics to paint a rosy and unrealistic picture for investors, policymakers and local communities. This should be a wakeup call for everyone concerned about our energy future and a spark for the SEC to investigate whether shale gas investors and the public have been intentionally misled."
