Nunnelee Statement on Administration's Decision to Tap Strategic Petroleum Reserve

Statement

Date: June 23, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Nunnelee issued the following statement after the Administration announced it would release 30 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).

"Poll numbers are causing President Obama to pull one political stunt after another. High gas prices are a serious problem facing all Americans. Instead of a real energy plan, the Administration will execute a short-sighted solution to the challenges facing our country. Drawing down reserves intended for national emergencies is far from the energy plan we need to address rising gas prices and achieve energy independence.

House Republicans continue to be on the side of American families and businesses, and have been at the forefront of energy security and job creation. Just last night, the House passed a measure to expedite drilling permits off the coast of Alaska. If we are going to truly relieve pain at the pump, the Obama Administration must quit opposing and blocking American energy production. Only more American energy will bring down gas prices long term, and create jobs here at home," said Nunnelee.
