Congressman Tierney Fighting to Protect Medicare

Press Release

Date: June 6, 2011
Location: Essex, MA

As part of his ongoing tour of local senior centers, Congressman John Tierney today met with Essex seniors to talk about his efforts to protect the future of Medicare. Republicans in Congress continue to push an irresponsible proposal that would hurt our seniors and our middle-class.

"Proposals to cut Medicare would have a devastating impact on our seniors and our families," Congressman Tierney said at the Essex Council on Aging. "Seniors are scared that Republican efforts will eliminate their health care options and put insurance company bureaucrats in the way of their personal relationships with their doctors. I will continue to travel around our community to talk with our seniors, hear their thoughts, answer their questions, and take their concerns back to Washington."

Recently, a Congressional report exposed the impact the Republican proposed budget would have on our community, including:

* Increase prescription drug costs for 8,300 local seniors who enter the Part D donut hole, forcing them to pay an extra $82 million for drugs over the next decade.

* Eliminate new preventive care benefits for 108,000 local seniors.
