Scalise Statement on Dismal May Job Figures

Congressman Steve Scalise today released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the unemployment rate for May increased to 9.1 percent nationwide and U.S. hiring slowed with only 54,000 jobs added.

"Today's jobs figures represent more bad news for American workers and small businesses, who continue to struggle with skyrocketing gas prices and burdensome regulations," Scalise said. "President Obama continues to double-down on a failed belief that economic recovery will come from an agenda based on borrowing trillions of dollars and spending money we don't have to grow the already bloated federal government. It is time for President Obama and liberals in the Senate to embrace the jobs agenda that the House Republicans have been passing, which uses proven methods to cut federal spending and grow our economy to create good jobs for American families.

"Just yesterday, the credit rating agency Moody's announced that without a serious commitment from Washington to tackle our fiscal crisis, they would consider downgrading their outlook on America's financial standing. We need to get government out of the way of our small businesses and empower our nation's job creators to do what they do best -- create jobs so we can reduce unemployment and get people back to work."
