Rep. Quayle Votes Against Debt Ceiling Hike Without Reforms

Statement

Congressman Ben Quayle (R-AZ) released the following statement Tuesday after voting against a debt ceiling increase without spending reductions or reforms. The vote failed 318-97 with no Republicans supporting the bill.

"Today's vote confirms what House Republicans have been saying for months: raising the debt ceiling without making real and lasting spending cuts is unacceptable. After initially calling for this vote, the White House, Congressional Democrats and Secretary Geithner must now recognize that a debt ceiling vote without reforms is a nonstarter for the American public. As the world's greatest economic power, America has an obligation to pay its debts, and I believe a default on those obligations would cause economic harm for this country. However, this obligation also requires us to deal with our debt situation honestly and decisively."
