Gosar Calls on Obama to Come to the Table on Debt Ceiling

Press Release

Date: June 6, 2011
Location: Prescott, AZ

U.S. Congressman Paul Gosar, DDS (AZ-01) today joined 75 other freshman Congressional members in asking President Obama to submit a realistic plan addressing the nation's debt crisis and debt ceiling.

"So far, only Congress has taken the time and effort to actually address solutions to the debt crisis" said Congressman Gosar. "The President wanted an unencumbered up or down vote on raising the debt ceiling. We gave it to him and we let the President know that we cannot simply borrow more money without also imposing cuts and enacting a plan to balance the budget. Now we have to get to work on real solutions. If the President won't lead on creating a budget and addressing the debt, then he at least needs to join us at the table to seek solutions."

The letter pointed out that on May 16th, the United States reached the $14.294 trillion debt ceiling. The Administration is saying that on August 2, 2011, it will stop paying our creditors. The letter also pointed out that the President stated, as recently as February, that "We will not be adding more to the national debt. To use a sort of an analogy that families are familiar with, we're not going to be running up the credit card anymore. That's important, and that's hard to do. But it's necessary to do."

Gosar added, "I agree with the President's February statement. We can't just run up a new credit card and pretend we don't have a problem. We do have a problem and everyone needs to come to the table to address solutions."
