Statement from Rep. McCarthy on New Republican Vote to End Medicare

Statement

Date: June 1, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY04) issued the following statement on today's vote by House Republicans on a rule that deems that the Republican Budget Resolution, which ends Medicare, has passed both the House and Senate for budget enforcement purposes. A vote for this rule is another vote to end Medicare.

"House Republicans seem more interested in appeasing Tea Party extremists and playing political roulette with our futures than in being serious about protecting our seniors and creating jobs. After starting a dangerous game of chicken with the nation's economy and putting our credit rating at risk, House Republicans voted again today to end Medicare in a bizarre step that assumes that their budget has passed the Senate, even though that body rejected it. The reality is that the Republican plan to end Medicare has been overwhelmingly rejected by the American people, because it will do irreparable harm to over 40 million Americans and their families. It's time for House Republicans to put political theater aside and work together to make this country greater."
