Congressman Jeff Fortenberry today commented on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech before a Joint Session of Congress:

"Prime Minister Netanyahu gave a strong and energetic speech reaffirming America's deep relationship with Israel. He confronted dangerous elements in Iran and Hamas, which pose grave threats to Israel, her neighbors, and the global community. And he emphasized the significant opportunities for new leadership models in the Arab world to promote security rights, human dignity, and peace.

"It was also important for him to highlight the long-standing Egyptian and Jordanian peace accords that have served as effective frameworks for peace for those nations and the Israeli people. The bold choice those leaders made has resulted in a model and vision of peace in the region. However delicate and fragile, that peace has held, and it gives hope for the security of Israel and a just and lasting peace with a Palestinian state."

Fortenberry authored a 2009 House resolution commemorating the 30th anniversary of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. He is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and its Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia.
