Rehberg Votes Against Extending Patriot Act

Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

Montana's Congressman, Denny Rehberg, today released the following statement after he voted against extending the USA PATRIOT Act in the House.

"There's a good reason an automatic expiration was included in the original USA PATRIOT Act. Like just about any piece of comprehensive legislation, there are some good things and there are some bad. We shouldn't feel like in order to preserve the benefits of this bill we have to accept those aspects that don't work or open up Americans to an undue infringement of our individual rights. In recent years, Montanans have grown more uneasy with the provisions of the PATRIOT Act. It's going to require some hard work and late nights, but there's time for Congress to go back to the drawing board and get this right. We need to make sure we balance our national security needs with the fundamental civil rights that I have sworn an oath to uphold. I'm going to continue fighting for a better solution that protects Montana families without asking them to surrender their Constitutionally protected freedoms."
