Matsui Statement on Older Americans Month

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-05), co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Seniors, released the following statement in honor of Older Americans Month, which is celebrated each May:

"We have a shared responsibility to ensure that our older Americans have the support they require. It is a responsibility that is passed down from generation to generation, and one we cannot take lightly.

"Unfortunately however, over the last month we have seen many of the programs that our seniors rely on, including Medicare and Medicaid, be targeted for cuts in the budget plan introduced by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI). This plan is unacceptable, and breaks the promise we have made to America's seniors that if they work hard and play by the rules, they will be able to live out their lives with dignity and enjoy a secure retirement.

"As we celebrate Older Americans Month, I reaffirm my commitment to our nation's seniors, and am resolved to see that our elderly are protected and supported. We must all stand together on behalf of America's seniors."

Congresswoman Matsui has been a long-time advocate on behalf of older Americans in Congress. As the co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Seniors, she has introduced the Seniors Bill of Rights, and has been an outspoken critic of the Ryan budget plan that would privatize Medicare and cut funding for Medicaid. Congresswoman Matsui recently held a telephone town hall with over 16,000 Sacramento seniors, and has produced several video messages to help explain the benefits of the health care law for seniors, and the impacts of the Republican budget plan.
