Johnson Announces $36,000 for USD Chemistry

U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) announced today that the University of South Dakota will receive a $360,000 federal grant to help smaller undergraduate universities and tribal colleges in the area with chemistry research. The funding was awarded by the National Science Foundation's Division of Chemistry, which aims to provide undergraduates with research experience.

"I am pleased the University of South Dakota will receive this funding to give more students the opportunity to participate in important research," Johnson said. "Federal funding is tough to come by these days, but it is important that we preserve programs that improve education and spur innovation."

USD will use this funding to recruit students from primarily undergraduate universities and tribal colleges to participate in ten-week summer seminars. Over three years, about 50 students and faculty will participate in the chemistry research and professional-development activities.
