Barton votes No on Budget Deal

Sticking with his fiscally conservative principles, Congressman Joe Barton (R-Ennis/Arlington) voted against the so-called budget compromise on Thursday afternoon. He outlined his reasons when he returned from the House floor:

"Now is the time is now to seriously start addressing our spending splurge. The only way to do it is to cut domestic discretionary spending and reform entitlements. While I think this budget deal is a step in the right direction, I voted NO because it doesn't go far enough. Republicans promised in the Pledge to America to cut $100 billion from this year's budget and this deal simply falls far short of that goal. On top of that -- it doesn't include any substantive relief from the regulatory zealots in the Obama Administration. I am disappointed that money will still flow to ObamaCare and the EPA will still be able to afford to crush our economy with unnecessary overregulation.

"The good news is this bill changed the conversation. We are now talking about cutting trillions from the deficit, not just billions. We can and we must balance the budget within the next five years. I will continue the fight for fiscal responsibility so we don't burden future generations."
