Sullivan Statement on Deficit Reduction

Statement

Date: April 13, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman John Sullivan offered the following reaction to President Obama's speech on deficit reduction at George Washington University.

"While it's good to hear the President talking about deficit reduction, he still doesn't get it -- the American people want significant spending cuts, not tax increases. With tax day right around the corner, I think most Americans would agree that cutting government spending is a better way to pay down our debt than increasing their tax burden. As I have said before, our nation is on the verge of an economic catastrophe -- our federal debt is over $14 trillion dollars, and the only way to secure a prosperous future for our children and grandchildren is for the federal government to stop spending money we don't have, and to implement a serious long term plan for deficit reduction. I am committed to changing the spending culture in Washington and regaining fiscal sanity. The President is right about one thing, this is about what kind of future we want - that is why the Republican budget proposal offers a serious plan to get our fiscal house in order by cutting trillions of dollars in federal spending without raising taxes one single American."
