Herrera Beutler Supports Government Shutdown Prevention Act of 2011

In the absence of a Senate bill to fund government operations, Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler today joined a majority of her House colleagues in passing the Government Shutdown Prevention Act of 2011.

Forty-one days after the House passed a long-term spending plan, Senator Harry Reid and the Senate majority have failed to pass even one bill to keep the government from shutting down. Herrera Beutler supported the Government Shutdown Prevention Act today that would keep the government running under the spending levels set by the House plan.

Under the bill Jaime voted for today, Members of Congress and the President will not receive salaries during a government shutdown.

"Until the Senate does its job and passes a bill, this legislation is intended to keep the lights and the government functioning. I don't want a shutdown," said Herrera Beutler. "It's a shame that the House is doing all of the work here. We passed a spending plan, and now we've passed a backup plan to prevent a shutdown. The ball is now firmly in the Senate's court to make the next move so that Congress can establish a long term funding plan."
