Senator Blumenthal Joins Legislation to Guarantee Payments to Military Personnel in Event of Shutdown

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) today announced his cosponsorship of the Ensuring Pay for Our Military Act, legislation introduced by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) to ensure that men and women serving in uniform -- all active duty, reserve, and Coast Guard -- continue to receive payments in the event of a government shutdown. The bipartisan bill would also provide flexibility for the Department of Defense to pay at their discretion civilians and contractors who serve in support of military personnel.

"It would be simply unconscionable to deprive our brave servicemembers of paychecks even as they and their families make sacrifices for our freedom," said Blumenthal. "The devastating economic effects of a shutdown for people in Connecticut and across the country would be felt by millions who depend on vital services and government programs. It adds insult to injury to deny our military men and women the pay and allowances they have earned bravely and selflessly. I urge all of my colleagues to sign onto this commonsense, bipartisan legislation in the unfortunate event of a government shutdown."
