Manchin Statement on Tonight's Budget Agreement

Statement

Date: April 9, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) issued the following statement regarding the budget agreement that was reached tonight:

"Today's agreement is a victory for fiscal responsibility, West Virginians and the American people. I am especially pleased that with this bipartisan compromise, the brave men and women serving in our military will continue to receive their paychecks on time, and seniors and veterans will experience no interruption in the vital services they rely on.

"However, it is a shame that we arrived at an agreement at the last hour of the last day, and I hope we do not reach this point again -- especially since we have even bigger challenges ahead. Although tonight's agreement is progress, we must immediately begin to address our critical long-term debt and deficit problems -- hopefully in bipartisan fashion. Let me be clear: I will continue to do everything in my power to put our fiscal house back in order and create good jobs in America once again."
