Hinchey Says Republican Plan Guts Clean Air Act

Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today released the following statement in opposition to H.R. 910, which would legislatively overturn scientific findings to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from working to protect Americans from greenhouse gas emissions.

"More than six hundred years ago governments snuffed out scientists who claimed the earth was round and revolved around the sun. Today, the Republican Party is continuing in that shameful tradition by attempting to legislate away the scientific findings they do not like.

"The EPA should protect the air we breathe and hold corporate polluters accountable based on the best scientific data available, but the Republican majority has a different plan. They're trying to hide findings that show greenhouse gas emissions pose a serious threat to our environment and public health in order to achieve a narrowly focused, ideological objective to benefit the bottom lines of our country's biggest polluters.

"There's a reason why the American Lung Association and over a hundred other health, labor, national security and environmental groups are calling this bill the 'Dirty Air Act.' It guts the EPA's capacity to make our cars, power plants and factories more efficient and cedes America's effort to become the world leader in clean energy technology to countries like China and Germany.

"This bill sends the wrong message to the scientific community and wills future generations a badly damaged planet."
