Chambliss Statement on Military Commission Decision

Statement

Date: April 4, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement today regarding the Obama administration's decision to prosecute 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four alleged co-conspirators in a Guantanamo military tribunal instead of a civilian court:

"While late in the game, I am pleased that the Obama administration has reversed course, and will now go back to square one and turn the prosecution of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed over to the Defense Department. Had Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's trial, which was underway in 2009, not been halted, that trial may now have been finished. This is a commonsense decision that is long overdue, and one that will ultimately provide some closure for the families of the victims of 9/11."
