Hatch, Zuckerberg to Headline Innovation and Public Policy Forum at BYU

Press Release

Date: March 9, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg will headline an interactive discussion on innovation, public policy and the emergence, and impact of social media at the Brigham Young University Marriott Center Friday, March 25, at 11 a.m.

Hatch, Chairman of the Senate Republican High-Tech Task Force, will discuss the value of innovation to the economy, the emergence of social media and its importance from a public policy perspective. Zuckerberg, who launched Facebook from his Harvard University dorm room several years ago, will provide an innovator's point of view on technology, growth and social media.

"Facebook's transformative technology has truly changed the way that people interact with one another, whether as friends, family, or even as citizens. And, it is creating jobs and spawning entirely new industries," said Hatch. "I especially appreciate the ability Facebook gives me to communicate directly and openly with the people of Utah about the issues they care most about. This event will be an exciting opportunity to discuss social media, how it started and where it is heading, for the high-tech sector in Utah and across the nation."

Hatch also lauded BYU, saying its entrepreneurial focus makes it ideally suited to host the event. Atlantic magazine recently placed Utah fifth in its annual survey of the nation's Top 10 States in science and technology.

"We are excited to host Senator Hatch and Mr. Zuckerberg at BYU," said Kelly Flanagan, BYU's Chief Information Officer and Vice President for Information Technology. "We look forward to hearing from Mr. Zuckerberg who, without question, is influencing how we communicate on a world-wide scale and from Senator Hatch, on innovation and public policy within the high-tech community."

Admission to the event is free and open to the general public. Seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. and all must be seated by 10:45 a.m. Visitor parking is available at the Marriott Center and LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Questions from the audience must be submitted by March 22nd, online to http://on.fb.me/BYUTech
