Statement Regarding Supreme Court Ruling in the Albert Snyder vs. Westboro Baptist Church Case

Statement

Date: March 2, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Judicial Branch

"As a nation, one of our most solemn responsibilities is to properly honor, respect, and pay tribute to those courageous Americans such as Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation and the ideals for which it stands. I am greatly disappointed that the Supreme Court has undermined this responsibility with its ruling in the Albert Snyder vs. Westboro Baptist Church case. Mr. Snyder is a parent who respectfully sought to bury his son in peace and with dignity. Unfortunately, members of the Westboro Baptist Church wrongly denied Mr. Snyder this privilege with their offensive and outrageous protest at his son's funeral. Today's court decision effectively condones the wrongful actions of the Westboro Baptist Church members."
