Statement

Date: Feb. 28, 2011
Issues: Transportation

Dear Neighbor,

Anyone who has spent some time living in southern California knows traffic is an unfortunate yet unavoidable part of our daily lives. Obviously some commutes and freeways are more frustrating than others. As some of you know all too well, one of the most congested freeways in our region continues to be the 91 Freeway, especially through Corona.

Thankfully, our local transportation planners at the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) continue to move forward with exciting plans to make significant improvements along the 91 Freeway in Corona. The project RCTC is working on would add three additional lanes in each direction from the Orange County line to just beyond Interstate 15. Two of the lanes would be an extension of the tolled express lanes (similar to those in Orange County) and one of the lanes would be a general purpose lane.

The $1.3 billion project is exciting for many reasons, including the fact it will create more than 1,800 jobs per year in Riverside County alone between now and 2015. However, I think most 91 Freeway commuters will agree with me in saying that the most valuable benefit of the project is the estimated 75 hours per year they will save. That is roughly an extra three days worth of time per year commuters will not have to spend in their car stuck in traffic (source: Riverside County Transportation Commission).

So the question is -- What would you do with an extra 75 hours of free time per year instead of sitting on the 91 Freeway? How would that extra time benefit your family, your business, or quality of life?

In conjunction with RCTC, we are hoping to get your answers to that question in an effort to demonstrate to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) how the 91 Freeway project will improve the lives of commuters. Your responses will be sent to U.S. DOT in support of RCTC's application for federal financing to ensure the project can be built on-time.

Please e-mail your responses to the question posed above to 91Freeway@mail.house.gov.

Sincerely,
Ken Calvert
Member of Congress
