Statement from Governor Beshear on Children's Advocacy Day

Statement

Date: Feb. 17, 2011
Location: Frankfort, KY

"I was thrilled to join such a large crowd gathered at the Capitol today to speak out on behalf of Kentucky's children.

Even in the most difficult economic environment of our lifetimes, we must do everything we can to support the health, education and development of Kentucky's children. That's why, throughout eight budget reductions totaling over $1 billion, we have protected SEEK, the basic funding for classroom instruction; provided health care for more than 50,000 children who had previously been uninsured; and started a pilot program to provide pediatric dental care to children in low-income families.

But there is still much work to be done. By raising the mandatory school attendance age to 18, we are sending a message to our students that education is a priority and the foundation for their future success. It is a change that is long overdue. I urge the General Assembly to pass House Bill 225, the Graduation Bill. It is the right thing to do for Kentucky's kids."
