Congressman Cantor Remembers Ronald Reagan on Birthday Weekend

Statement

Congressman Eric Cantor (VA-07) today issued the following statement regarding the 100th birthday of President Ronald Reagan:

"This weekend in Simi Valley, Santa Barbara and across America, we honor the 100th birthday of one of our nation's greatest presidents, Ronald Reagan, whose vision and influence is just as relevant today as it was during the latter half of the 20th Century. President Reagan served our country during extraordinary times and brought us through historic challenges with optimistic leadership, moral clarity and courage. It was actually my father's involvement on Ronald Reagan's campaign for President that spurred my involvement with politics, and today we remember a man whose wisdom, eloquence and principle created not just a revolution, but an American revival.

"President Reagan encouraged America to be great again and his words touched something deep inside all of us, leading our country out of an economic downturn similar to the one we face today. His common sense vision of empowering the individual in lieu of government through lower taxes and greater liberty lifted us out of those difficult times. That vision guides the approach that Republicans are taking today, so that we can grow the economy and get people back to work.

"President Ronald Reagan had the positive spirit and courage of his convictions that inspired my generation and future generations to enter public service and make a difference in our country. Nearly forty-seven years ago, a man stood before his country and said, "You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done.' Here we are, in 2011, and still these words should remain our guiding principle as we work to overcome our challenges so that our children and our children's children will have the opportunity to see the America that Ronald Reagan loved so very much.
