Congressman Steve Southerland today voted to repeal the $2.6 trillion government takeover of America's healthcare, an important first step in restoring focus on cost effective solutions for the American people. The legislation passed the House of Representatives by a 245-189 margin.

"Government-run health care must be repealed and replaced with responsible reforms that empower patients and their doctors without bloating the size of government or the debt we leave to our children," Southerland said. "Today's vote reflects the will of the American people, who have soundly rejected the massive tax increases, crippling mandates, Medicare cuts and bureaucratic red tape included in this job-destroying law."

"As a third generation small business owner, I understand the crippling impact that this law has on family businesses struggling to meet a payroll and create jobs. While I believe America needs sensible health care reforms that expand access, lower costs and increase competition, we must be mindful of the impact it will have on our still unstable economy," Southerland concluded.

Among his first initiatives in Congress, Southerland has cosponsored legislation to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, defund the agencies and accounts set aside to implement the law, and remove onerous tax paperwork requirements that stifle small business growth.
