"The news of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' shooting is shocking and saddening. She is a trusted colleague and someone I consider a friend.
"It is a tragic day when a Representative and her staff are personally attacked and seriously injured while fulfilling the basic duties of meeting with constituents and serving their community. This is a senseless and heartbreaking assault on those dedicated to public service.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and the families of all of the victims in this unthinkable and devastating incident today."
