Health Care Repeal Balloons Deficit, Hurts Economy and Families

Statement

Today, Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member on the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement about the Congressional Budget Office's analysis of the Republican plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act:

"Today the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office -- our referee on the budget -- released its preliminary analysis of the Republican plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The results are staggering, and it's clear that repeal would harm both our long-term fiscal stability and the economic and health security of American families. Within a week of taking control of the House, Republicans want to add $230 billion to the deficit over the next decade and more than $1 trillion over two decades -- a move that flies in the face of their pledge to reduce the deficit. They want to strip health care coverage from 32 million Americans, and, for those who have health insurance, they want to increase costs and decrease benefits.

"Again and again during the campaign, we heard from Republicans that we must focus on jobs and deficits that threaten our economy. It is clear now that those were empty promises. GOP leaders want put special interests back in charge of Americans' health care, without regard to the cost to families, small businesses, and our economic recovery."
