Senator Boxer: Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Statement

Date: Jan. 14, 2011

Dear Friend:

On January 17th, people across America and around the world will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year, thanks to a 1983 federal law that I was proud to co-sponsor, we commemorate Dr. King's birthday on the third Monday in January.

In his immortal "I Have a Dream" speech, Dr. King shared his vision of a land where people of every religion, race, and creed could realize the American dream. On this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, let us come together to take action to give every American an opportunity to make the dream come true.

It is only fitting that we honor Dr. King on this day by working to improve the lives of others. Throughout our nation, people help those in need by feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, healing the sick, and offering a guiding hand to at-risk youth.

Next week, as we mark the national celebration of Dr. King's birthday, let us not merely reflect on his work but also live his legacy.

Sincerely,

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer
