Congresswoman Susan Davis Statement on Passage of Tax Bill

Statement

Date: Dec. 16, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Susan Davis released the following statement after passage of the tax bill which was approved by the House on a vote of 277-148.

"We can't afford this bill, but the reality is we also can't afford to not pass this bill.

"I don't know how Republicans can champion the cause of millionaires while Democrats fight for the middle class, but they are drawing a line in the sand at helping those who need it the least. The Republican side of this deal just adds billions of dollars to the debt and does not create jobs.

"I do know two things: It is the best deal we are going to get right now, and it will benefit millions of Americans and thousands upon thousands of my constituents who really need it.

"We all know something else. High-income tax cuts do not push our economy forward.

"But working families are hurting in this economy, and they need the help provided in this bill like marriage penalty relief, childcare credits, tuition deductions, and unemployment insurance.

"I believe we could have and should have negotiated a better deal. Yet no matter how strongly I feel, without this bill people will suffer, and I will not let that happen.

"I hope that moving forward we can refocus on our national priorities, ensure our tax structure reflects those common values, and arrive at a bipartisan conclusion for how we're going to pay for them."
