José Peralta understands that our Senior population has worked hard to build this City and State. As they approach their golden years, we must do more to ensure they have all their needs taken care of. José will ensure that more services and programs are implemented for the senior population throughout New York State.

Free Public Transportation for Senior Citizens

Understanding that Seniors are retired citizens with fixed incomes and cannot afford the extra expense of public transportation, José Peralta will ensure that seniors are able to use the public transportation system for free. Seniors need a break from their daily expenses in a City that has become very costly for people to live in. José will work in the New York Senate to ensure that seniors can travel throughout the City and State without the burden of spending their meal, medicines and housing moneys on transportation costs.

Increasing Protections for Senior Citizens

José Peralta believes that seniors have earned the right to live with dignity in the neighborhoods of their choosing. In order to achieve this goal, he supports making improvements to the SCRIE (Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption) program by providing a tax credit incentive to encourage landlord participation. In addition, José will fight to expand (SCHE) Senior Citizens Homeowners Exemption -- so the greatest generation can afford to own a home in the communities they have invested in and improved over decades.

More funding for Senior Centers and Special Programs

The need for senior services and programs cannot be emphasized enough. The senior population continues to grow and proper places for programs and services need to be continued and created. José Peralta provided hundreds of thousands of dollars through the NYS Assembly to fund local senior centers in his district . The funding provided for new renovations; special programs and services; arts and culture projects; furniture purchase; and computers. José Peralta knows that quality of life is important to the senior population and that they spend a great deal of time at their local Senior Centers. Recently, José Peralta allocated $50,000 to the Jackson Heights-Elmhurst Senior Center
