Reed Statement on Travel Alert to Europe

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

After heightened concerns about the potential for an al-Qaeda terrorist attack on European targets caused the U.S. State Department to issue a travel alert, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), a member of the Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement:

"My office has received numerous requests from Rhode Islanders who are concerned about the safety of travel to Europe.

"A travel alert is a step below a formal travel warning, which would advise Americans not to visit Europe. This alert asks Americans who are currently in or traveling to Europe to be vigilant and cautious.

"The Obama Administration is applying relentless pressure to disrupt terrorist plots around the globe. According to published reports, recent information obtained from a German national captured in Afghanistan is one of the main factors that led to this travel alert for Europe. This obviously means anyone travelling to Europe should be alert to their surroundings.

"I encourage everyone travelling abroad to check the State Department's web site before departing to make sure you have the information necessary to make informed decisions. If you or a loved one are travelling overseas and need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact my office. And I will continue doing everything I can to keep Rhode Islanders informed."

Rhode Islanders may register their travel plans online with the consular section of the U.S. Embassy at the State Department's website: state.gov

Travelers can also get updates on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747.
