Bishop Hails House Passage of 9/11 Health Bill

Today, Congressman Tim Bishop voted with a majority of the House to pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act to provide necessary medical monitoring and treatment to World Trade Center first responders and those who worked or lived in downtown Manhattan on September 11th.

"This vital legislation is long overdue, and I am proud to join my colleagues in standing for those who took a brave stand for us when our nation was attacked on September 11th," said Congressman Bishop.

The legislation was brought to the Floor of the House of Representatives in July, but was scuttled by near-unanimous Republican opposition. Today, the bill passed by a vote of 268-160, largely on party lines.

"Despite the delay tactics and political games, I never doubted that we would find a way to do the right thing," Congressman Bishop said. "It is a testament to the dedication of the 9/11 First Responder community that we take this step forward. In many ways, they are the conscience of our nation, and I am proud to stand with them today."

Bishop introduced the following statement into the Congressional Record today:

"Madame Speaker, I rise in strong support of this bill and thank the leadership for giving it a second chance. The heroes who responded on September 11th certainly deserve a second chance.

Those heroes didn't hesitate. Americans united immediately on September 11th. But nine years later, this House remains divided.

First responders, survivors, and their families have waited too long for Congress to act. On this congressional session's final day, we must fulfill our promise to care for them and treat them for their exposure to toxins at Ground Zero.

Residents of Eastern Long Island, who I proudly represent, are getting sick, as are thousands who came from nearly every state. This isn't just a New York issue, it's an American issue.

I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to unite in support of our heroes by voting for the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act."
