Kaufman: "Cut Taxes and Borrow Money to Pay for it" Same Republican Philosophy that Turned Record Surplus into Record Deficits

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Ted Kaufman (D-DE) released the following statement Thursday on the Republicans' irresponsible tax proposal:

""Cut taxes and borrow money to pay for it'-- it's the same Republican philosophy that turned a record surplus under President Clinton into record deficits under President Bush. Majority Leader McConnell is proposing tax breaks over 10 years that would put us $4 trillion deeper in debt -- doubling the deficit.

"I oppose extending tax cuts for the top 2 percent of Americans. The responsible choice is the President's plan to permanently extend tax breaks to middle class Americans and small business owners -- the real engines of our economy."
