Garrett Statement on Obama's Latest Stimulus Proposal

Statement

WASHINGTON, September 8, 2010 - Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) issued the following statement today in response to President Obama's plan for a second stimulus package:

"It's downright irresponsible for the president to be proposing another ill-considered stimulus plan that will have little impact on our economy and will do virtually nothing to create jobs for Americans. The president's latest "stimulus' proposal is nothing more than a half-baked scheme, developed in haste by a White House desperate to stave off massive Democrat losses in November. This proposal makes clear what we have known all along -- the Obama White House is more focused on protecting the jobs of its Democrat cronies in Congress than creating jobs for hardworking Americans.

"If we have learned anything over the last nineteen months, it's that the American public is sick and tired of massive government spending that adds to our budget deficit and balloons our national debt. Not just that, but they are fed up with the constant government overreach into the economy. Based on the president's latest proposal, it's obvious he hasn't gotten the message. This "stimulus' package would not only increase government spending, but would also create yet another government-run bureaucracy to interfere with the private sector.

"If President Obama were truly dedicated to growing our economy and creating jobs for Americans, he would abandon his plan to let the Bush tax cuts expire in January and find a way to reduce his dependence on government spending. Rather than double-down on another failed stimulus package, perhaps President Obama could consider alternative plans that don't increase taxes and add to our debt.

"I have already offered my own economic proposal called the Economic Recovery and Middle-Class Tax Relief Act. My bill would not only provide broad, growth-oriented tax reductions for all Americans, but would also cut government spending. Taking it a step further, my proposal would bring immediate relief to our struggling economy and put people back to work -- two things the president has failed to achieve over the last nineteen months."
