Today, Representative Ed Royce (R-CA) reacted to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's plan to include amnesty legislation, known as the DREAM Act, in the Defense Department authorization bill:

"Under this legislation, illegal immigrants will be granted amnesty by meeting minimal criteria. For every illegal immigrant admitted to a university, an American student or legal resident would be turned away at a time when every state university is raising tuition, and many are curtailing enrollment.

"Additionally, this legislation provides illegal immigrants with benefits that American taxpayers are not eligible for. This legislation repeals the current federal ban on in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. However, U.S. citizens attending college out of state will continue to pay higher tuition fees.

"Simply put, this isn't fair. Amnesty legislation, like the DREAM Act, will only compound the problem, draw more illegal immigrants to this country, and encourage those breaking our laws to continue to disrespect them. We need to focus on enforcing our current immigration laws."
