Clyburn on the 20th Anniversary of the ADA

Press Release

Date: July 26, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). On this occasion Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI) will be the first Member in a wheelchair to preside over the House of Representatives.

"Today is a historical moment for all Americans. On the 20th Anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act, Congressman Langevin will become the first member in history in a wheelchair to preside over the House of Representatives. In a place that is dedicated to the ideas of freedom, equality, and self determination, this important occasion marks our continued commitment to equal opportunity for all Americans. I join my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in congratulating Congressman Langevin.

"Over the past 20 years the rights of American's with disabilities have come a long way. This is largely thanks to the bipartisan leadership from Majority Leader Hoyer and Congressman Sensenbrenner. Both of these Members championed the original legislation that expanded opportunity to tens of millions of Americans with disabilities, and they both continue to ensure that no Americans with disabilities are excluded."
