Blog: Kultala: Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Women's

Issues: Women

Today, August 18th, marks the 90th anniversary of Women's Right to Vote. Kansas was the fourth state to ratify this amendment, a testament to the high value our ancestors placed on equality and democracy.

But the right to vote is only as strong as our commitment to voting. A ballot not cast is a voice not heard. That's why it is encouraging to see women continuing to vote in record numbers. This November, voters will have a chance to decide the type of leadership they want to lead our state out of this recession and onto a better future.

Last year 60,000 Kansans lost their jobs. On the front lines of this recession are the mothers, daughters and sisters of Kansas. Consider this: women are more likely to be the bread-winner in a single parent family. We are more likely to have jobs with no pensions and no health insurance. On average, women make only 77cents to every dollar made by men doing similar work. Surely, we can all agree that no one should lose part of each month's paycheck to discrimination.

Registering to vote is simple. Simply print out a voter registration form, fill it out, sign it and deliver or mail it to your county election officer. And most importantly, VOTE on November 2nd.

Only by participating in our democracy can we preserve it, protect it and perfect it.
