Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Bono Mack (CA-45) applauds the passage of H.R. 6080 in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. If enacted into law this bill would beef-up efforts to secure our borders by providing $600 million in emergency funding for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Congresswoman Bono Mack has long supported efforts to secure the northern and southern borders of the U.S., believing secured borders are of utmost importance for national and economic security.

"Congress' most important job is to enact policies that keep Americans safe. I applaud Speaker Pelosi and the Democrat majority for finally focusing on America's safety and to begin addressing securing our nation's borders. The passage of H.R. 6080 is a step in the right direction, but much more needs to be done to secure our northern and southern borders--this is a matter of national security," stated Congresswoman Bono Mack. "I am relieved the Democratic majority is finally focusing on America's safety and is addressing securing our nation's borders."

H.R. 6080 is paid for through offsets, and according to CBO the net effect of the bill would be $52 million in deficit reduction. Provisions of the appropriations in H.R. 6080 are as follows:

* $305.9 million for U.S. Customs and Border Protection
o $253.9 million for salaries and expenses.
o $14 million for border security fencing, infrastructure, and technology.
o $32 million for air and marine interdiction, operation, maintenance, and procurement.
o $6 million for construction and facilities management.
* $80 million for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for salaries and expenses.
* $8.1 million for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center for salaries and expenses.
* $196 million for the Department of Justice for "necessary expenses for increased law enforcement activities related to Southwest border enforcement."

Congresswoman Bono Mack was also proud of the fact that this bill was revenue neutral and will not contribute to the national debt. H.R. 6080 passed the House of Representatives by a voice vote.
