Mark Quick Supports Freedom of Association in Dealing with the Proposed Islamic Cultural Center

Press Release

Date: Aug. 17, 2010

Mark Quick, the Independent candidate for Congress' 5th district, has issued his support for individuals and companies, who are to make a decision on whether or not to provide construction support for the proposed Cordoba House, an Islamic cultural center.

There are public officials and candidates who are calling to make this a national issue in midterm elections, by injecting the federal government into this issue.

The constitutional framework of federalism implies that the federal and state governments should stay out of this local issue. Since the NYC City Council has given the permission for the Cordoba House to be built, the decision to build it openly rests upon the shoulders of companies and individuals, who are responsible for providing the material.

Freedom of association means that if individuals and companies choose not to take part in the construction of the Cordoba House, then their right should be respected, and that they should not be coerced to take part in the construction, by the government. Coercion would fall under the "involuntary servitude" clause of the 13th amendment of the US Constitution.

Mark Quick has called for Congressman Garrett to join him in supporting the exercise of an individual right of freedom of association in dealing with the building of the proposed Islamic cultural center.
