A Question for Alabamians

Statement

Date: July 27, 2010
Issues: Oil and Gas

I want your feedback on a matter that concerns all of us voters. This is not just for the citizens of Alabama, but all citizens of the Nation who are following the campaign. Given the results of the Horizon Deepwell catastrophe and the economic impact on the lives of millions of Americans along the Gulf Coast, from Texas, through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida; "Should we, the people of the United States, continue to allow offshore drilling for oil in the Gulf, or the North Shore in the Arctic Circle?" I would like to hear from all the citizens of Alabama, and citizens throughout the Nation regarding this very important matter.

As many of you know, I am the Democratic Party Nominee for the United States Senate from Alabama, running against Senator Richard Shelby who has been in the Senate for 24 Years. However, I am not sponsored, nor endorsed by the Democratic Party, nor the Republican Party. I have not received any support from the State Democratic Party, nor have I received support from big business, or corporations. Why, you might ask? Because I do not have the financial resources to launch what is believed to be a real campaign against the well entrenched Richard Shelby who has amassed a $17 Million Dollar campaign war chest to scare off any challengers to the office. There have been challengers in the past, challengers who were tokens who could easily be defeated by Republican Senator Shelby. Has Senator Shelby ever asked the citizens of Alabama, or the Nation, whether they believed, or wanted, offshore drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico, or the Northern Shore at the Arctic Circle? I do not believe he has.

Drilling for oil in water, especially deep water, one mile below sea level, as was the case in the Horizon Deepwell drill, is especially dangerous and hazardous. That, we have learned first hand from the catastrophe that occurred on April 20, 2010. A catastrophe that has seriously affected the lives of more than two million people who live along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, from Florida to Texas, and done serious harm to the sensitive ecological system of the Gulf of Mexico and its shorelines. Serious harm that will be evident and felt for many decades, and lifetimes, to come. Yes, there are efforts underway to clean up the tar balls that wash ashore in various locations and skimmer boats that are taking in the sea water and oil and separating the many hundreds of millions of gallons of oil from the water, but the damage to the sea life, such as sea turtles, shrimp, sharks, and other sea life too numerous to mention, will take decades, if not several lifetimes, to recover. The question which begs an answer, "Is our thirst for oil worth the destruction to our environment and our lives?"

A point to ponder in search for an answer to this important matter involves taking serious thought about the 3,500 to 4,000 oil wells which presently exists in the Gulf of Mexico. If we were to have a serious earthquake within the Gulf of Mexico region, would the earthquake cause damage to the existing wells and create leaks into the Gulf of Mexico that could not be stopped? What would such a catastrophe event have on the environment and the citizens of the Gulf Coast region of the Nation? If such a catastrophe should happen in the Northshore Arctic Region, how would we be able to fight to contain the devastation under the ice and winter conditions found in the North Arctic regions?

We must address the issues presented in this presentation. Our midterm National election is a mere 97 days away, November 2nd, and decisions must be made to decide who are the candidates who will BEST represent the citizens of Alabama as our democracy and democratic process demands.

A vote for William G. Barnes on November 2nd for the United States Senate is a vote for your future and the future of your children and your children's children. Support William G.
