Governor Donald L. Carcieri Supports Effort to Eliminate the Master Lever

Statement

Date: July 28, 2010

Governor Donald L. Carcieri today voiced his support for the efforts by Robert J. Healey, Scott Avedisian, et al, to eliminate the master level on the Rhode Island ballot.

"The master lever option is outdated and ineffective. Since the democratic-controlled General Assembly refuses to give the voters of this state the benefit to make choices based on qualifications rather than party affiliation, I applaud the efforts by these individuals to do away with this archaic and unfair practice," said Governor Donald L. Carcieri. "Eliminating the straight party option will encourage voters to research candidates and make an informed decision, giving all candidates, independent of party affiliation, a fair chance. Eliminating the master lever will bring greater democracy to our election process."
