Rep. Susan Davis votes to Extend Unemployment Benefits to Millions of Americans

Press Release

Date: July 22, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Former service members and reservists would be included

Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) voted to provide important relief to millions of Americans with an extension of unemployment benefits for another six months. This also includes tens of thousands of former service members and reservists who return home and find themselves without work.

The bill makes the benefits retroactive to June 2 when the last extension of benefits expired.

"Since the lapsing of unemployment benefits, millions have lost the benefits keeping their families in their homes and food on the table," said Davis. "Now is not the time to turn our backs on these Americans when they are struggling."

On the House floor, Davis conveyed the thoughts of a constituent who had written to her. He said, "I've worked all my life and supported myself and didn't ask for any special treatment. There is pride that comes from work…No one is more ready and willing to work than me…but there just isn't any."

The bill heads to President Obama who is expected to sign the bill immediately.
