U.S. Representative Edolphus "Ed" Towns (NY-10) today released the following statement in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA):

"We proudly commemorate today the 20th anniversary of the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act -- historic legislation that extends the promise of inclusion and equal opportunity for disabled Americans. Since becoming law, the ADA has assisted more than 50 million Americans with disabilities access workplace opportunities by removing barriers to employment, public transportation, public services, telecommunications and public accommodations.

"As a proud sponsor of the ADA, I honor the millions of disabled individuals who have made significant contributions to the American workforce in the past two decades. I also commend my colleagues in both chambers of Congress, as well as the numerous disability rights organizations, that worked in support of this milestone legislation that has helped transform the lives of countless disabled Americans and their families.

"In observance of this defining moment in our nation's civil rights history, let us rededicate ourselves to ensuring that our nation continues to fulfill the promise of inclusion in our communities and all in levels of our society."
