Space: Senate has Once Again Ignored the Needs of Ohio Families

Press Release

Date: July 16, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Calling upon the Senate to put aside their weekend, finish the job, and pass an extension of unemployment insurance for out-of-work Americans, U.S. Rep. Zack Space (OH-18) today lashed out at the Senate for again leaving town without passing this crucially-needed extension.

"Every single Senator holding up these benefits needs to ride along with me as I travel across our district or sit with me as I hear the stories of my constituents," said Congressman Space.

"They need to hear the stories I've heard in every County that I represent. They need to hear about the hard-working Ohio families that are still seeking employment and whose benefits have run out. They need to hear the stories of my constituents who aren't sure where their next meal is going to come from, who don't know how they're going to make their mortgage payment, and who are wondering how they're going to make it to the next week.

"These are the stories that these Senators need to hear," Space continued. "I cannot even begin to express my outrage that they are so callously willing to keep kicking this down the road."

Over 2.4 million Americans are currently suffering as a result of Senate Republicans, who have blocked even a simple vote on the extension of these much-needed benefits. The House of Representatives has voted several times to restore emergency unemployment benefits, allowing Ohio families to get the help and resources they so desperately need. By the end of July, the number of Americans who have lost benefits since the last extension ran out at the end of May will top 3 million.

Congressman Space has represented Ohio's 18th Congressional District since 2007. He has been working to restore integrity to the office, and to create the conditions to bring new industry and jobs to Ohio. Recently, Congressman Space launched FIGHTING TO RENEW OHIO, the second phase of his plan to provide long-term economic growth in Ohio's 18th Congressional District.
