Statement On House Approval of Emergency FEMA funds

Statement

Date: July 2, 2010

"Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed a supplemental appropriations bill that includes emergency funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). When released, these funds should free up payments to those Jefferson County residents whose homes were rendered uninhabitable by the 2008 flood.

Two years after that flood, the delay of these payments is inexcusable and I have made it my mission to get those funds to their intended recipients.

It is now up to the Senate to pass the bill and send it to the President.

In a call to FEMA Deputy Director Richard A. Serino this spring, I pressed him to immediately release the critical payments to Jefferson County flood victims. He held the line that FEMA needs supplemental funding to do so. When those funds are released, there can be no more excuses.

I will hold Mr. Serino accountable for his word and see this through until the homeowners receive payment."
