Press Release

Date: June 21, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper (PA-3) is being recognized for her support of common-sense economic policies in Washington and small business principles. Congresswoman Dahlkemper was presented with the Horst G. Dent Legislative Service Award by the Independent Bakers Association last week in Washington.

"As a small business owner, I believe the common-sense principles of running a business--operating under a budget, taking responsibility for your work and staying within your means--should apply just as strongly in Washington as they do in the business community back home," said Rep. Dahlkemper. "That argument can be a tough sell in Washington. It's really encouraging to know that small businesses in Pennsylvania aren't giving up on the fight for fiscal responsibility, because I'm not giving up on it either."

Nicholas Pyle, president of the Independent Bakers Association, notified the Congresswoman of the award, citing Dahlkemper's "well recognized status as a Blue Dog Democrat, business owner and supporter of fiscal responsibility." In addition to Rep. Dahlkemper, Congressman Mike Pence of Indiana received a Horst G. Dent Legislative Service Award.

Rep. Dahlkemper has been a strong proponent of fiscal responsibility during her time in Washington and supports key reforms to bring down the national debt. She was a vocal proponent of statutory pay-as-you-go (PAYGO), which requires any new spending to be paid for and not added to the deficit. Rep. Dahlkemper also supports a balanced budget amendment, a discretionary spending freeze, and systematic, timely reviews of federal programs to ensure they are using taxpayer funds efficiently.

Scott Barth, CEO of Barth Packaging and Baking of Wilkes Barre, Pa., presented the Congresswoman the award at a ceremony on Capitol Hill. The Independent Bakers Association (IBA) is a national trade association of over 400 mostly family owned wholesale bakeries and allied industry trades. The IBA was founded in 1968 to protect the interests of independent wholesale bakers from antitrust and anti-competitive mergers and acquisitions; encourage Congress to support market-oriented farm commodity programs; and to seek representation to consider federal labor, tax and environmental law.
