Issue Position

Recognizing that small business is the foundation of our country, I want to encourage and support the entrepreneurs and small businesses to start and grow in District 31. The first few years of starting a business are the most difficult. Therefore, we need to provide tools to these businesses so they can succeed and hire in areas like District 31.

I would support tax credits or tax breaks for all small businesses, but that cannot be the only answer. I want to provide funding and support to programs that help our small businesses start and grow. For example, I want to increase the funding for the Captial Access Program (CAP), which helps small businesses secure the loans they need, so that more business can grow and hire more workers. When you look at any company in America today, we tend to forget they started as a small startup business. We need to encourage entrepreneurship, not discourage it.

I will work to reduce the constraints placed on employers regarding who they can hire. I want to make hiring Hoosiers easier, not harder, for employers. I like, respect, and support the purpose of unions. In fact, I grew up in a family where my father spent 40 years as a union member. However, some unions are obstacles to bringing jobs and businesses to District 31. I believe the role of unions should be to ensure its members earn a fair wage and benefits, have a safe working environment, and provide support when times are tough. I'm committed to working with labor leaders and business owners alike to make sure those conditions are met, while at the same time ensuring everyone who wants to apply for a job has the chance to get hired.
