Bono Mack Statement on Repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy

Statement

Date: May 27, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Calling attention to outreach from the Service Chiefs (linked), Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today issued the following statement in opposition to an amendment that would repeal the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy:

"This vote represents exactly why people are frustrated with Washington - why request a review on how to make significant changes to military policy if politicians are not going to wait for the results?

"I care deeply about our men and women in uniform and believe it is essential that a thorough review be completed by our military commanders prior to Congress enacting such a sweeping change. This vote should have happened after that review.

"The heads of four service branches made their concerns clear, in writing, about Congress taking this vote before a study is completed. I think we do them a great disservice if we ignore their advice on this important issue.

"The Secretary of Defense asked for only a few short months to make the changes repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell would entail. Yet by taking this vote today, we took time away from our military leaders that could have been used to complete such an important process. Our men and women in the armed services deserve better."
